Shimon Peres - The Hawk in Dove skin? (Nov. 11 2006)

Protesters outside Woolsey hall.

Remember Rachel Corrie?

Shimon Peres came to Yale thanks to the efforts of the Caravan for Democracy (a Neocon outfit?) and spoke to a packed audience. Of course, I wanted to test if he was a "hawk" masquerading as a "dove." After all he is still part of the government that committed grave excesses this summer (read Lebanon). I asked him what he thought of Mordechai Vanunu, and if he would use his power as Vice-Premier to free him of restrictions and stop his future detainment, but basically Peres accused Vanunu of being a traitor and that he deserved his predicament. I leave you to judge if Peres is a dove. I'm basically getting annoyed by the idea popular that only the right-wing can bring lasting peace. But more importantly, hardly anyone in the audience knew who Vanunu was, and I had to explain who he was to some in the front-row. The average American is well informed thanks to Rupert Murdoch.
